Racism and Colorism in Pop

Updated: Sep 5, 2020

Hey everyone, welcome back to another blog. Today I am going to be talking about racism and colorism in pop but before we start, I just wanted to say that I have merch and a YT channel with the video version of this blog, both of which will be linked below, also I am also in the process of changing my site and YouTube channel name and logo so make sure to tell me whether you like it! Also, these are just my opinions and is purely based of my research on the topic so it's okay if you disagree just don’t attack people who agree with my opinions! This blog is inspired by my most popular YouTube video which is this very same topic but in K-pop I will have it linked below for anyone who is interested.

 Now let's start! ~

Double standers are a huge thing in pop music. What may look good on some isn’t good on others. Now I'm assuming many of you guys know I'm talking about dreadlocks and cornrows. I personality as a black person don’t have a problem with anyone of any race wearing these hair styles to me it becomes a problem when people hate on black people for having these hair styles but think its other races supporting black commutes or supporting black people by wearing such things. Excuse me but what? This is what bugs me and just gets under my skin. For example, a while ago Zendaya had dreadlocks. They looked amazing in my opinion but people were saying she smelled or her hair smelled just because of her hair style. What?! I really just don’t understand. I feel like now people do get really sensitive whenever really anyone wears these hairstyles which I don’t totally agree with but I can understand due to situations like that.

Blackface is another really big thing. For my example I'm going to be using Arianna Grande. I love Arianna and don’t have anything against her and for this one I’m calling out her makeup artist. Arianna isn’t black nor is she Hispanic she’s Caucasian and anyone who has seen her in victorious knows that. So why is her makeup being applied so darkly? Arianna looks just fine without entire new layer on her face so why does it feel like this is what the makeup artist are intending? I do also feel the need to mention when Arianna was told she was trying to sound like a black woman. I’m using the statement loosely since I don’t know what Arianna’s intentions were. This was a situation in its self and I can’t even get into that now-

When it comes to favoritism let me just say it is very heavy in pop music and pop culture as a whole. Lighter skinned pop artist are very favored. And before you jump me and tell me “What about Beyonce?” “What about Rhianna?” and etc. They are both lighter skinned black women. Even Nikki Minaj has a lighter completion. I do think that this may have had some impact on their popularity. Back in the destiny child days Beyonce was the lightest and most popular member but I’ll let you decide whether it was a coincidence or not.

And lastly my final point. Color doesn't matter in music and shouldn’t have ever even been something people thought about. Music is sound, it never should have turned into people's image and what they look like. I still find it hard to believe we are still in a day n’ age where I can make a video like this!

Anyways, I hope you guys enjoyed this video if you did make sure to leave a like, comment down below your opinion on racism and colorism in pop music and Join the site because almost none of you are  and it only takes one second! And with that I’ll see you next week- bye~
